Thoughtful design. Practical thinking. Rooted in place.

R Design Studio is a residential design and property feasibility studio focused on helping people make better decisions about their homes, properties, and projects.

Founded on years of professional experience in residential design and project development, the studio brings together creative design thinking with an understanding of how projects actually move from an idea to something that can be built.

That means looking beyond the floor plan.

Every project is shaped by its site, its surroundings, the people who will use it, construction realities, regulatory requirements, budget, and the opportunities that may already exist within the property.

R Design Studio works with homeowners, landowners, builders, real estate professionals, and small developers to make sense of those pieces and turn them into a clear project direction.

Whether the question is “What could I do with this property?” or “How do we turn this idea into a home?”, the goal is the same:

Understand the problem. Find the opportunity. Design with intention.

Our Approach

Start with the property. Design for the people.

Good residential design should feel like it belongs where it is.

Rather than beginning with a predetermined style or solution, R Design Studio starts by understanding the property, the people, and the priorities behind the project.

We look at how a site is approached, how spaces relate to views and outdoor areas, how people move through the home, how the building responds to its surroundings, and how design decisions affect construction.

The result is a process that balances design, function, context, and practicality.

Our Process

Understand

Every project begins with listening.

We start by understanding your goals, property, priorities, concerns, and the questions you're trying to answer. Existing information about the site or home is reviewed to identify the major opportunities and constraints that may influence the project.

For some clients, this begins with a simple Project Fit Call. For others, a more detailed feasibility study may be the right first step.

Explore

Before settling on a solution, we explore the possibilities.

This may include site planning, building placement, floor plan studies, additions, ADU opportunities, circulation, orientation, massing, or different ways of organizing the project.

The objective isn't to generate options for the sake of having options. It's to understand the tradeoffs and identify a direction worth developing.

Refine

Once a direction is established, the design becomes increasingly resolved.

Plans, exterior form, spatial relationships, materials, and important project details are developed together so the project works as a whole.

Throughout this stage, design decisions are considered alongside constructability, site conditions, applicable requirements, and the realities of building.

Realize

A good idea needs clear information behind it.

As the project develops, the design is translated into drawings and documentation appropriate to the project scope. When additional expertise is required, the work can be coordinated with builders, engineers, consultants, and other licensed professionals.

The goal is to carry the original idea forward without losing sight of what made it meaningful in the first place.

Our Values

Context

Every property has something to say.

Views, topography, climate, neighboring buildings, access, vegetation, orientation, and the character of a place all influence good design. We believe projects become stronger when they respond to those conditions rather than ignoring them.

Clarity

Good decisions come from understanding the problem first.

We believe in identifying constraints, opportunities, and important questions early—before unnecessary time and money are committed to the wrong direction.

Craft

The quality of a project is often found in the details.

Proportion, materials, transitions, circulation, and the relationship between spaces all matter. We approach design with an appreciation for craftsmanship and for the people who ultimately have to build what is drawn.

Collaboration

The best projects aren't created in isolation.

Homeowners understand how they want to live. Builders understand how things come together. Engineers and consultants bring specialized knowledge. Good design creates a framework where those perspectives can work together.

Practicality

Design should be ambitious without becoming disconnected from reality.

Budget, constructability, regulations, site conditions, and long-term use are part of the design problem—not obstacles that appear after the design is finished.

Purpose

We don't believe in adding complexity simply to make something look designed.

Every decision should have a reason. The goal is to create places that feel intentional, useful, enduring, and connected to the people and properties they serve.

Good projects start with good questions.

You don't need to arrive with all the answers.

Whether you're evaluating a piece of land, considering an addition, exploring an ADU, planning a remodel, or thinking about building a new home, R Design Studio can help you understand what's possible and determine where to go next.
